Two years ago, it was September, we wanted to tell another story. Or more precisely, a fairy tale, a legend? Let's start further back.
Hic sunt leones - literally "the lion is here" - is a Roman proverb referring to the mysterious and unknown continent of Africa. This ancient proverb was popularized in all the unexplored areas of the empire. And that's exactly what we're after: lions. We were excited by the idea of exploring uncharted territory and taming new beasts, and Galehon, Krumkhorn, and Theobald were just a few of the many fearsome beasts we were eager to face.
We had heard of La Rossiqnol, a group of Italian musicians specializing in Renaissance music. After a short research and a few phone calls, we finally met Domenico, the group's chief organizer and lute player.
In our first impressions, Renaissance music performers still lived in the frills between the curtains, talking tall about philosophical topics by candlelight. So we were surprised - but also a bit disappointed - when we found that even Domenico was looking for a good sample library for his ...... Renaissance model! Moreover, we found his "chase" to be very reasonable, since only a very small number of the vast Renaissance repertoire has been sampled, and the physical objects might be a valuable tool for giving new life to the Vicinage scores and the unspoiled Vicinage scores. Joke.
Joking aside, we managed to get Domenico and the Nightingales involved in our project. However, we still lacked some instruments. The cornet, the galliard and the dulcimer are difficult beasts to tame. They live in deep forests or deep in the sea, and good tamers are in short supply. At the time, we almost began to think that the true lions were more than just the instruments themselves, they were their players! It took us weeks to find and hire the right man for the job, and eventually, our battalion gathered some of the bravest and most fearless warlords in our shire: Lord Cantalupi of Clan Wolfsong and Count Mendonico of Clan Cornet.
At the time, we wanted to gather the most accurate information about the instruments sampled, but the players of La Rossiqnol were scattered all over the place from Bologna to Milan. To make a long story short, we had to travel long distances to meet them, but those days of joint planning, meetings and sandwiches became one of the best parts of the project.
Interacting with different people and in different ways led us to think more precisely, not only about the interface or behavior of the virtual instruments we wanted to build, but also about the framework, the general idea and the inner voice of the "Renaissance" we wanted to shape from scratch.
Ultimately, this becomes the toughest - and rather ironic - challenge of all: to give new life to an old rhyme and play it in the context of the present!

This was, in the end, the most difficult - and somehow ironical - challenge: to give new life to age-old vibrations that has to be played in a present context!
