KONTAKT - 10,46 GB
The library can naturally be used on its own. However, when used in conjunction with other titles in the Virtuoso Japanese series (such as KOTO 13 Version 2, KOTO 17, or SHAKUHACHI) as well as with orchestral instruments, the KOTO 20 accomplishes a rich and extensive ensemble.
As a matter of historical record, the 20-string koto was conceived by Keiko Nosaka in 1969. Originally, the koto was strung with 20 strings, but in later iterations, another string was added to make it a 21-stringed instrument.

Designed to capture 20 strings of koto
The KOTO 20 features a Scale Performance mode that maps the tuning of each string to 21 adjacent strings. The zither is played by adjusting the tuning of each of the 21 strings of the first musical piece to be performed. The KOTO 20 features a Scale Performance mode, which maps the pitch of each string to the 21 adjacent white keys. This allows the performer to access the instrument in the most realistic way possible.
KOTO 20 contains 18 different playing styles to reproduce the wide range of musical expressions of the koto. These include different nuances produced by playing with the thumb, index or middle finger as well as sliding, vibrato plucking and even chirashizume plectrum scraping. All playing styles can be controlled independently by key switches.
The three KOTO 20 phrase banks contain special techniques that are difficult to reproduce, from classic koto techniques such as glissandos and surizume to sound effects made by striking the bridge. The banks are selectable via keyswitches and can be triggered from a MIDI keyboard. You can also control the pitch and tempo of each bank.
Instrument Modeler reproduces different fingerings and strings.
The tonal characteristics of the koto vary greatly depending on the finger plucks used and the thickness of the strings. To faithfully reproduce these variations, we have developed a new feature called Instrument Modeler.
With Instrument Modeler, you can adjust various parameters, including fretting and string thickness (Thick, Normal, and Thin), the pitch and start of note transients, and the noise component. This feature allows you to control the character of the sound as you wish, from a natural playing feel to very aggressive playing.
Alternating pizzicato and sustain pedal control for natural continuous pizzicato phrasing.
The library comes with three alternating pizzicato runs to reproduce the natural sound changes that occur when playing continuous pizzicato. The alternating pizzicato can be switched via a keyswitch or sustain pedal control. This feature makes it easy to reproduce realistic vibrato plucking.
With the sustain pedal control on, you can toggle between normal strumming with a Key on event and alternate strumming with a keyoff event.
The string editor supports independent tuning adjustments for all 21 strings. The library comes with 10 commonly used scales (Chromatic, Ionian, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixed, and Whole Tone), including chromatic scales.
You can play many musical compositions using presets and modal transpositions. The additional User Scale mode allows you to create custom scales for specific compositions. When creating custom scales, you can set the volume and sound image of each string, as well as fine-tune each string.
- User Scale
By customizing all 21 strings, you can set up scales for specific tunes or original compositions, thus incorporating koto elements into any music. Custom scales are saved as user scales and can be recalled at any time.
Note: User scales cannot be transposed.
Full 24-bit/96 kHz high resolution multi-microphone samples
Recordings were made with great care, using over 8 various types of microphones and colorless microphone preamps. All library samples were recorded in 24-bit/96 kHz HD to faithfully capture the full range of the koto's delicate expression.
These samples were recorded using three stereo microphone positions (Direct, Overhead and Room) and Stereo Mix. Full mix control is provided, with separate volume, image, reverb send and EQ adjustments for each channel. A parallel output bus sends the mic channels to separate DAW tracks for even finer mixing sessions.
The library comes with 30 Convolution Reverbs, including two impulse responses from the Noh Theater, which is known to musicians for its acoustics. Convolution Reverbs allow the creation of high quality in-instrument sounds.
Load manager reduces memory usage for smoother production work
Using the Load Manager, performers can choose to load only the desired cadence. Skipping unnecessary samples results in smoother performance from the Kontakt engine.
MIDI Slot Browser
The KOTO 20 features an extremely useful groove browser that allows you to quickly find MIDI grooves and drag and drop them directly into your DAW.
You can adjust the strength, swing, playback speed and other parameters of the rhythm directly from KONTAKT / KOMPLETE KONTROL.
The library comes standard with 20 MIDI rhythms, including phrases that demonstrate the instrument's capabilities. When used in conjunction with the soon-to-be-released Groove Inspirations MIDI package, the Groove Browser gives you access to an extensive library of phrases.
