The modern marimba, a descendant of the African balafon, originated in Mexico and is typified by a wooden bar mounted above a metal resonator tube that can be tuned using tuning pegs.

This Soniccouture instrument features the 5-octave Yamaha 6100, designed by marimba legend Keiko Abe.

The 6100 is state-of-the-art, featuring uniquely precise tuning, Honduran rosewood levers, and a welded resonator for rattle-free playing.

TREMOLO FLOW
Tremolo is a highly expressive marimba technique and we have designed an original Kontakt module to simulate it with unparalleled accuracy. It easily handles 1 to 4 harmonic parts (since marimba players rarely use more than 4 mallets), and intelligently remaps vibrato in real time based on incoming MIDI or your playing.

The speed and strength of the vibrato can be modulated in real time using a MIDI controller.

Humanise control provides a more natural expression - varying the timing and speed of sequences by subtle, random amounts - allowing your work to breathe and flow.

The marimba is very large, almost 3 meters wide, which makes it a challenge to record it; it's a great instrument.
It's impossible to get too close to an instrument of this size and maintain any kind of reasonable stereo image.
Since our goal is to make intimate, non-ambient recordings, we need a very large but relatively dry studio to work in.

It isn't possible to get too close to an instrument that large and maintain any sort of sensible stereo image.
And since we were aiming for an intimate, non-ambient, recording, we needed a very large but relatively dry studio to work in.
