21-string African Harp
A beautiful and fascinating African instrument, the kora is hard to categorize. With 21 rods and a cowhide resonator, it is a bridge harp, but with some lute or guitar DNA mixed in.It originated in Gambia and is widely used in Mali, Senegal and throughout Africa.
Sonically, it is similar to a harp, but when played in a traditional style, it is also similar to a guitar played using the flamenco or Delta blues technique of strumming polyrhythmic patterns with both hands.
Soniccouture's virtual instruments are designed to be very playable and versatile, featuring a MIDI mode player for real accompaniment and fine tuning for real scales if desired.
The kora is made from a gourd, which is cut in half and covered with cowhide. This forms the resonator of the instrument. There are 21 strings, suspended by a double notched bridge - 10 on one side and 11 on the other. This is typical of a double harp, which it is classified as. However, since the strings originate in the "neck" and pass through the bridge into the resonator, this also makes it a lute.
