Tone Introduction:
Alpha Organ has assembled a pair of beautifully sampled organs, recorded separately and together at St. Paul's Church in San Francisco, California. Each organ contrasts sharply with the other, and when both are played in unison at the same time, the sound is wonderful. We captured both instruments individually and together with a variety of microphone types and positions to give you a variety of aesthetic options.
Built by the Kilgen Church Organ Company of St. Louis, Missouri, the "lower" organ was originally water-powered, but was later converted to an electric blower-driven system. The console is located on the south island near the side door, its pipes are hidden behind the altar, and the blower and machinery are located under the floor of the Apse, allowing the lowest pedal notes to resonate through the floor, seemingly shaking the foundations.
The upper organ is larger and more elaborate and was built by the Felix F. Shoenstein & Sons Organ Company of San Francisco. It is arranged high above the Gate and Narthex, in a mezzanine between the two bell towers. The first organ - our "Alpha" organ - is sweet and silky in tone, while the second - our "Omega" organ - is thunderous and powerful in body and energy, with a more powerful blower, larger console and more pipes.
We think the space has extraordinary acoustic properties that border on the mystical. Every time we record there, we experience wave after wave of strange synchronicities. The whole hall seems to sing, as if it were a great living instrument. In honor of the heightened sense of strangeness that the space seemed to evoke, we enriched the library with a very wide range of sound design environments, leads, percussion pads, drones, and custom effect presets, delving into psychoacoustics and metaphysical aesthetics. The church was built by its own perishoners over a twenty-year period, beginning in 1897, delayed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and finally completed in 1911, using stone salvaged from the ruined city itself. It has a lush texture, full of spacious ventilation and crystalline transparency, without a hint of muddiness or oversaturation. This reverberant hall is one of our favorite recording locations, home to our acclaimed Requiem for a Gentle Symphonic Choir, the Native Instruments Symphony Series brass ensemble and solo ensembles, and many other classic Soundiron libraries.

We've added powerful sound-shaping controls to the user interface to give you complete flexibility. All presets include controls for volume swell, onset and release times, sample start offset, vibrato and sound bank selection. The main preset also features a mic mixer and octave effect. the Layered preset includes four separate sound layers, each with a full set of parameters that can be linked, automated, and customized. The first three layers are the Near (Mic 1), Center (Mic 2) and Far (Mic 3) mic positions. The fourth layer is the Ambiences layer. We used a variety of sound design techniques to morph the sounds of the journey into 30 different tones and dissonant percussion pads, synthesizer tones, and ambient dreamscapes. They can be played individually or used to add texture and body to the main sounds.
In the Advanced Settings drop-down window, you'll also find an adaptable per-layer LFO system with selectable LFO shapes, modulation target parameters, tempo, intensity, tempo sync, and fade time. You can also apply your choice of 13 low-pass, high-pass, and FX filters, as well as assignable modulation targets such as force, modulation wheel, expression, aftertouch, key, and step sequencer meter controls. Our customizable arpeggiator features a built-in intensity sequencer meter that controls arp direction, note timing, swing, randomization, and duration. The built-in modular FX Rack window offers 27 different DSP effect modules that you can assign in any of the 8 available slots in any order you want. You'll find classic phasers, flangers, delays, distortions, amp and cabinet simulators, compressors, EQs, rotators, and more. the Reverb effector includes 99 of our own convolution reverb pulse presets.
