The heptachord is an ancient Greek harp dating back to ancient Mesopotamia (2500 BC). The earliest description of a seven-stringed heptachord was found in a sarcophagus in Crete (1400 BC). The classical heptachord had a resonance box/resonator with two raised arms connected by crossbars to which the strings were attached.

We sampled the seven-stringer in depth using a variety of finger positions, each of which has a different quality of articulation and percussion, including fingers, nails, mutes, and short vibrato. Fingers are warmer and softer, while nails and soft articulations are sharper, more percussive, and clearer. We've also recorded 3 types of harmonics, glissandi, under the bridge and seven-string bowing. In addition, Lyre includes Glissandi FX, Bowed FX and Sound FX.

Lyre recorded using four microphone positions, including a contact microphone, an internal proximity microphone, a semi-proximity and a room microphone. The end result is a staggering 9,300 samples and the most comprehensive sample of ancient heptachords ever recorded. We've also added a new miniature tuner so you can use traditional Middle Eastern tuning.

Microphone position
The Lyre comes with four different microphone options, including a contact microphone, a close internal microphone, a semi-proximity microphone, and an indoor microphone. The contact mic provides a unique view of the instrument's resonant body, while the close mic gives you a pre-sound captured outside the body of the instrument. Semi-closed and indoor microphones provide a more ambient feel.
