Brass Band Soloist
The Brass Band Soloist brings together some of the finest instrumentalists in the North of England, and its sophisticated interface and innovative legato programming produces an unparalleled sense of authenticity.

Traditional brass bands are a cornerstone of the British classical music scene, featuring traditionalorchestral musicA warm and lyrical instrument rarely seen in the team brass section. As a result, they tend to be under-represented in sample libraries.

The North of England, where Fracture Sounds is based, is the heartland of brass band music, so it's only natural that many members of our team have played in brass band ensembles. This personal experience and familiarity with the instrument made this library a natural candidate for our first commercial continuo library.

Utilizing our network of skilled players, we've brought together some of the area's top talent, including contest winners from notable bands such as the Black Dyke Band and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band (featured in the movie Brassed Off).

Each player was recorded individually in Nave Studois' hall, but our innovative instrument placement options allow for easy spatial adjustments. This feature allows the ensemble to blend seamlessly with other instruments in your existing sample library collection, providing versatility and integration. The soprano cornet, cornet, contrabassoon, tenor horn, and bass horn included in this package have a wide range of tones and offer a unique sound that is softer compared to orchestral music, and when paired with our new legato engine, these brass instruments have never sounded more lifelike in the digital realm.

Introduction to Intelligent Continuous Play
Say goodbye to the tedious task of dragging MIDI across the timeline, and synchronize transitions to the rhythm of your composition. In Smart Mode, the instrument intelligently analyzes incoming MIDI notes and selects the correct transition lengths, ensuring that every playback is flawless and requires no further editing, while delivering a truly authentic sound.

The key to the realism of this feature is the delay - by delaying the audible output, the engine is able to "anticipate" and adjust the playing to the upcoming notes - just like a real player. The higher the delay, the more natural the playing. The delay figures shown in the Legato setting are perfectly accurate, so you can easily compensate for this with the negative track delay feature in your DAW. This gives the instrument the time it needs to analyze incoming MIDI data while maintaining perfect timing - provided the MIDI is properly quantized. Using this feature, you can now spend more time composing and less time caring for your instrument.

Continuous Play Option
In addition to Intelligent Continuous Play, we have also included Classic Mode, which is closer to the existing Continuous Play libraries on the market and offers single tempo control. For more information about the two legato playing modes and their usage times, please refer to the user manual.

There are two types of legato: non-vibrato and vibrato, which can be switched seamlessly using key switches when triggering notes. Using them as individual articulations, rather than combining them on the vibrato slider, preserves the soloing qualities of each instrument, as it avoids any doubling effect at the intersection between samples.

Both legato types also feature slide and tongue playing, triggered by the velocity of each note.

Position your instrument anywhere
Another new tool we've added to this brand new interface is Instrument Placement, offering three options.In Situ sets the player's position to the typical brass band seating layout used for recording.

The Custom Position mode allows you the freedom to place instruments in different positions in the room, which is useful when using these instruments in different ensemble configurations, such as when using them in an orchestral setting. This mode uses the impulse response recorded from each seat position through the same microphone setup, allowing for very convincing results that would not be possible with panning alone.

We also offer a "Center Stereo" option, which uses a separate set of microphones to place instruments in the center of the soundstage. This overrides the main microphone mixer and removes the natural panning in the room, providing a wide center stereo image that can be further processed with panning and reverb if desired.

Microphone position
As with our other libraries recorded in large acoustic spaces, Brass Band Soliosts offers three stereo microphone positions: near, room, and far. For drier sounds, you can emphasize the near signal, while you can rely on the far microphone to capture the full depth of the hall. This flexibility can be easily controlled with our Perspective Slider, or by muting and clearing microphone signals you don't need.

Meet the Musicians
In British brass bands, the cornet is regarded as the first violin in the orchestra, so we were honored to have Jamie Smith join the project, who at the time of recording was the first cornet and leader of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band - one of the most famous brass bands in the world. The cornet is in the same range as the trumpet, but offers a softer sound that contrasts with the sharp brightness offered by the trumpet.

An unrivaled experience
Sitting next to Jamie is former Grimethorpe Colliery Band first cornet player Alan Morrison, who joined the band just before the dramatic period in the movie 'Brassed Off'. We were delighted to have Alan's experience with this project, which was reflected in his excellent tenor cornet playing, which has a brighter tone than the cornet, and acts as a solo instrument that can be used throughout the brass band. The contrabassoon is also in the same range as the cornet, but offers a darker secondary tone, again contrasting with anything you'd find in the traditional orchestral brass arsenal.2023

National Champion of the Year
At the lower end of the instrument's range is the tenor horn, played by Soibhan Bates, who played in the Black Dyke Band, which at the time of the recording was the British Brass Band Champion. The tenor horn's range is similar to that of the orchestral French horn. But like all brass band instruments, it provides a softer tone and is constructed so that techniques such as vibrato are easy to play - a more difficult articulation to achieve on the French horn.

Finally, a bass horn played by Jim Fieldhouse, Director of Music and multi-instrumentalist at the University of Huddersfield. This bass instrument provides a good balance between the tuba and tenor trombone in the orchestra. While it does not play the bass notes of the tuba, it does provide a warm bass tone that matches the tone provided by the other instruments.

Meet the Musicians
In the British Brass Band the Cornet is seen ass the eguivalent of the 1st Voilin in an Orchestra, so we were proud to invite Jamie Smith on to the project who at the time of recordinq was the 1st Cornet and Leader of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band- one of the most renowned brass bands in the world.
