Innovative and evolvingpercussion

We used Superball friction mallets to sample a variety of orchestral bass drums, timpani, taiko drums, thunder drums, and gongs to create an evolving library of sound textures. Working closely with percussionist Joby Burgess and Emmy-nominated recording engineer Nick Wollage, we created a virtual instrument like no other.

The Superball is a rare mallet with a rubberized ball end that is used by percussionists to produce a unique buzz-like sound. To capture Joby's playing on these magnificent instruments, we chose the world-famous Grove Studios UK, built by legendary Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler and located in the heart of London. We chose it for its large, sonically rich live studio, its array of vintage and modern microphones, and its fantastic 96-channel Neve 88R console running through the world's best Prism Sound analog-to-digital converter. The studio has been used to record the soundtracks for Gravity, Mission: Impossible, Macbeth and Stardust.

Finally, we designed and built a dedicated and powerful sampling engine with an intuitive interface that allows the user to further play and shape sounds. It offers a wide range of sound shaping tools, from moving a fader to all microphone settings (called "Proximity"), to the ability to morph between subtle and intense articulations, all the way up to full reshaping tools such as an advanced " Gater". You don't need to read the manual to use the instrument, but we highly recommend it, as we're sure you'll learn some tricks you didn't know you had.

Joby is a prolific artist, musician and educator whose approach to music and experimentation is truly unique.

Nick Wallach is an Emmy-nominated recording engineer at the forefront of film scoring and classical music. His outstanding talent has taken him to the top of the industry, recording Star Wars: A Personal Story, How to Train Your Dragon, Wonder Woman, Harry Potter, and many other iconic soundtracks.
