Harmonic Tides is a library of ethereal soundscape strings crafted from delicately resonant cello and bass string overtones.Soundiron collaborator Pierce Constanti created Harmonic Tides with the specific goal of producing a uniquely expressive, textured sound design instrument that would be perfect for movie soundtracks. Harmonic Tides has two main sound sources. The first is a shimmering, delicate and airy texture derived from layered cello harmonic glissandos. This patch is designed to add organic movement to the music. Each key is sampled using four dynamic layers. The second sound source is a sharp, hollow sound that comes from a layered sample of a plucked string on the bass between the bridge and the tailpiece. This sound is intended to add subtle tension and dynamics to the music. Both of the transport groups have a wide chromatic and dynamic range, allowing them to be played expressively and live using a keyboard or other MIDI controller.

Although Harmonic Tides was recorded using traditional orchestral instruments, the unusual performances and treatments belie their origins. Cellos and basses are close-miked to capture as much detail as possible, and up to eight layers of solo performances pan around the listener. These multi-dynamic instruments can be woven and blended to create subtle swells and textural waves. Combined with additional creative processing, the result is a sound that is more pad or drone than orchestral, and is perfect for a variety of remixes and arrangements. From this source, we expand the series outward to explore a deep array of detailed leads, percussive pads, short notes, stings, fluid atmospheres and rich textures.
