The APU Loudness Compressor is a compressor/expander designed to support modern loudness types (LUFS, True Peak). This means that the compression curve is a function of the LUFS measurement, not the RMS or Peak. Since LUFS is a more accurate measure of loudness, the compression effect is very transparent, making it particularly suitable for mastering and post-production workflows. The compressor is also able to operate in a more traditional way, using RMS and Peak measurement units, so you can have it all.
By default, the Compressor uses the Source Range and Destination Range instead of the Threshold + Ratio controls. You can also enable the traditional Threshold + Ratio controls if you wish. The drop-down menu located in the upper right corner of the Compressor Dynamics section allows to switch between these and other modes of operation (e.g. Expander, Limiter, etc.).
When "Learn" mode is enabled, the compressor will automatically adjust the source or target range to match the source material. This is a great way to get started with the compressor and can be used as a starting point for further fine-tuning.
Check if it fits your workflow. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact us using the "Contact Developer" beacon on this site.
loudness style
One of the main features of this compressor is that it supports a wide range of loudness types. The compressor's detection circuitry can be configured to use LUFS or conventional units of measurement (RMS, Peak). You also have the option of splitting or linking channels, which is particularly useful for multi-channel audio formats such as Dolby Atmos®.
The detector circuitry of the compressor can be configured to use any of the following loudness types:
momentary
Instantaneous is a short duration LUFS measurement (400 milliseconds) that can be used to process the moment-by-moment dynamics of audio. This mode is responsive but also transparent, making it a suitable default mode for compressors. k-weighting and channel weighting are applied to the compressor's detection circuitry to improve perceptual accuracy.
Instantaneous LUFS
Short Term is a longer duration LUFS measurement (3 seconds) that can be used to process large-scale dynamics in audio. Due to the longer duration, this mode is not as responsive as the Instantaneous mode, but can be used to adjust the larger picture of audio dynamics. K-weighting and channel weighting are applied as in Instantaneous mode.
Short-term LUFS
The RMS Loudness type uses a rolling time interval of 300 ms. RMS is a traditional loudness measurement and is a good first order approximation of perceived loudness. This mode does not apply K-weighting or channel weighting to the compressor's detection circuitry, giving it a more traditional characterization.
RMS
The True Peak Loudness types are similar to traditional peak measurements, but they are more accurate because they account for inter-sample peaks. These measurements use a time interval equal to the configured block size (1 ms by default). This mode is extremely responsive and is suitable for very fast startup and release times.
true peak
The Peak Loudness type is a standard peak circuit that runs at intervals equal to the configured block size (default 1 ms). This is another traditional compressor-style measurement. Technically, this mode is even faster than the true peak response, but is less accurate since it does not account for inter-sample peaks.
