Welcome to Cremona.
The city of Cremona, Italy, known as the birthplace of stringed music, has a long and special history. Built hundreds of years ago from the wood of the surrounding forests, each instrument has its own unique personality, and together their sound represents the heart, soul and magic of the region.CREMONA QUARTET has a collection of four precious stringed instruments dating back to the 1600s, capturing and preserving every detail of their rare characteristics.
Meet the Quartet
These instruments were made by some of the finest luthiers in history. In the Auditorium Giovanni Arvedi in Cremona, the players played every note with every articulation and extremely detailed recordings, and their sound is now immortalized in contemporary works.
Stradivarius Violin - 'Mount Vesuvius'
Born around 1644, household name Antonio Stradivari is the most famous luthier in the history of violin making. His innovations in proportion and shape set trends that continue to influence craftsmanship today. His "Vesuvius" violin, the leader of our Cremona Quartet, was built in 1727, in the prime of the master craftsman's career.
You can also access the sounds of Mount Vesuvius in solo form using a Stradivarius violin.
Stradivarius Cello - 'STAUFFER'
Although Stradivari is best known for his violin making, he also made other stringed instruments. His "Stauffer" cello, built in 1700, is listed as an Italian national treasure. The sweet, deep tones of the quartet add weight to the overall sound of the ensemble.
Guarneri Violin - "Prince Doria"
Stradivarius may be the world's most famous violin maker, but many of the world's most distinguished performers and composers consider Guarneri del Gesù to be the best. The second violin in the quartet is his "Prince Doria", built in 1734.
Amati Viola - 'STAUFFER'
Andrea Amati was a pioneering luthier, widely regarded as the inventor of the violin as we know it. His son Gerolamo continued this tradition in the family workshop in Cremona, and in 1614 he made the quartet's oldest instrument, the "Stauffer" viola.
Extraordinary recording process
The sound of CREMONA QUARTET was captured using a customized array of microphones and preamplifiers placed in a specially designed acoustic environment. Even the locals of Cremona played their part by stopping all traffic in the vicinity of the auditorium for the duration of the recording to ensure that no external noise could interrupt the process.
