with respect to
Al Schmidt.
In retrospect, figuring out that Al would end up behind the console was a no-brainer. He actually grew up in the studio. He was seven years old, and he hung out with his Uncle Harry (who was also an engineer), helping to set up the musician's chairs, clean the patch cords and everything else the assistants of the day brought in.
These were the days of the booming New York big band and jazz scene of the late 1930s. That scene hummed with tons of work and studios scattered throughout the city. From there, his path was pretty much paved. Working under the tutelage of many of the era's legendary engineers for formative years, he honed his craft before moving to California. After that, the rest is music history. Really.
In fact, Al Schmitt's footprint in the recording industry is hard to fathom, or even describe. The numbers alone are incredible: 727 records, 160 gold and platinum albums and 23 Grammy Awards.
Going through his records is even more daunting-his hands and ears literally shaped our collective musical history. From now on, immortal icons like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke, to Madonna, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand and Paul McCartney, he has shaped the history of our collective music. Barbara Streisand, and Paul McCartney-Al has been working with them.
