The APU Loudness Compressor is a compressor/expander designed to support modern loudness types (LUFS, True Peak). This means that the compression curve is a function of the LUFS measurement, not of the RMS or Peak. Since LUFS is a more accurate measure of loudness, the compression effect is very transparent, making it particularly suitable for mastering and post-production workflows. The Compressor also operates in a more traditional manner, using RMS and Peak measurement units, allowing you to have your cake and eat it too.
By default, the compressor uses the Source Range and Target Range instead of the Threshold + Ratio controls. You can also enable the traditional Threshold + Ratio control if you prefer. The drop-down menu at the top right of the Compressor Dynamics section allows to toggle between these modes of operation and others such as Expander, Limiter, etc.
With Learn mode enabled, the compressor automatically adjusts the source or target range to match the source material. This is a great way to get started with the Compressor and can be used as a starting point for further fine-tuning.

Loudness flavor
One of the main features of this compressor is that it supports a wide range of loudness types. The compressor's detection circuitry can be configured to use LUFS or conventional units of measurement (RMS, Peak). You also have the option of splitting or linking channels, which is particularly useful for multi-channel audio formats such as Dolby Atmos®.
The detector circuitry of the compressor can be configured to use any of the following loudness types:
moments
Instantaneous is a short-duration LUFS measurement (400 ms) suitable for processing the instantaneous dynamics of audio. This mode is responsive but also transparent, making it a suitable default setting for compressors. k-weighting and channel weighting are applied to the compressor's detection circuitry to improve the accuracy of the perception.
Moment LUFS
Short-Term is a longer duration LUFS measurement mode (3 seconds) suitable for processing large-scale dynamics in audio. Because of the longer duration, this mode is not as responsive as the Instantaneous mode, but it is useful for adjusting the full picture of audio dynamics. As with Instantaneous mode, K-weighting and channel weighting are also applied.
Short-term loudness
The RMS Loudness type uses a rolling time interval of 300 milliseconds.RMS is a traditional measure of loudness and is a good first order approximation of perceived loudness. This mode does not apply K-weighting or channel weighting to the compressor's detection circuitry, making it more traditional.
effective value
The True Peak Loudness type is similar to traditional peak measurements, but is more accurate because it takes into account inter-sample peaks. These measurements use a time interval equal to the configured block size (1ms by default). This mode is extremely responsive and is suitable for very fast attack and release times.
true peak
The Peak Loudness type is a standard peaking circuit that uses a time interval equal to the configured block size (1ms by default). This is another traditional way of measuring compressors. Technically, this mode responds even slightly faster than true peak, but is less accurate because it does not take into account inter-sample peaks.
