Cartago is a Kontakt library to a vast array of ancient, modern and custom-designed filmpercussionCreated in collaboration with renowned sound designer Stefano Maccarelli, whose critically acclaimed work includes the Ethera vocal library series, Elements, Kepler, and more, Cartago delivers a rich, carefully crafted sound organized in two powerful Kontakt instruments.

Cartago offers a rich selection of acoustic and designer percussion instruments, from classic orchestral bass drums, timpani and snare drums to customized Roman timpani and a variety of frame drums. Traditional world instruments are also well represented, including Japanese taiko drums, Middle Eastern dabka and West African drums, as well as rare body-sounding instruments such as rattlesnake drums, ding dongs, forked bells, and scarabellums.

Cartago includes two versatile instruments: an acoustic percussion sequencer and a design drum kit. Both instruments are designed to provide composers with an intuitive, user-friendly experience for seamless percussion sequencing and drum design that is both creative and efficient.

1. Acoustic percussion sequencer

The Acoustic Percussion Sequencer instrument has 51 multisampled drums. Each drum has 12 loops, up to 7 dynamic levels and 3 microphone positions (Close 1, Close 2, Room). The microphone positions for Close 1 and Close 2 vary according to the drums sampled: for frame drums they correspond to front and back respectively, while other configurations are used for drums of different sizes and shapes. For each type of drum, 3 different hits were recorded: for big drums like taiko, bass drum or bigger frame drums, these corresponded to the center, middle and border respectively, while the other articulations were used for smaller drums. The instrument features 3 separate layers in order to combine different percussion sounds, for a total of 9 different sounds that can be played simultaneously from the keyboard. In addition, the Acoustic Percussion Sequencer features a multi-step sequencer based on several real-time interchangeable patterns, as well as further controls for expression, tightness, and scale for further more expressive dynamic control.

2 . Designing a Drum Kit

The Design Drum Kit is a sound design oriented instrument with over 2200 one-off samples. It is designed to creatively layer and manipulate pre-designed drum and percussion samples and play them in a finger-striking MPC fashion. In fact, the Designed Drums Kit is based on 16 separate percussion pads (located on the left side of the GUI) that can be loaded with sounds.The basic concept of the Designed Drums Kit can be summarized as follows: load any sound to any percussion pad, and map any percussion pad to any key on your MIDI controller. Would you like to have an instrument with 16 different bottom drum sounds? You can. Do you want to load the exact same snare sample on each of the 16 percussion pads and manipulate it independently on each pad? You can. Would you like to create your own kit by exploring the vast array of one-off options? You can.

The samples in the -Designed Drums Kit are regular .wav files, accessible from the Samples folder. They can be used outside of Kontakt.
