Charming mini-grand piano with vintage and rugged style
Verticale's compact grand piano counterpart is here.Mezza Coda delivers a rich and authentic sound that captures the nuances and beauty of a compact grand piano, enhanced by the warmth and character of two unique signal layers.

Contained in Mezza Codacassette tapeThe same "cassette" layer as in our popular Verticale sample library, it adds a vintage vibe and a touch of grit to the already amazing sound of a small grand piano.

As we did for Verticale, we used the old Portastudio setup to pass piano samples to tape at maximum speed, and then converted those samples back to our digital audio workstation, slowing down the tape as much as possible.

Distbox
In addition, Mezza Coda features a new signal layer called "Distbox", which is sampled using Portastudio as a distortion device.

We recorded a stereo mix of the piano to tape while hitting the Portastudio preamplifier with a very hot signal and then slowing down the tape. The result is a raw, distorted signal that adds a unique character and texture to the sound of the piano, perfect for adding edge to your music or creating a lo-fi ambience.

Just like the Verticale, the Mezza Coda offers three different microphone positions, all stereo pairs: room and two different spot mics.

There is a pair of ribbons and a pair of large diaphragm condensers that give you complete control over the tonal character of the piano. Simply use the dots on the bottom of the faders to activate the microphones, and route them to different channels if you want to mix them separately in your DAW.

FX
The Mezza Coda includes two reverb and delay sends, both with multiple modes. You'll also find a Color knob that works like a tilt equalizer - move it to the left for a darker sound and more body, or to the right for a thinner, brighter sound. Also, use the Sync Toggle to toggle between tempo-synchronized music values and milliseconds.

For a truly nostalgic sound, explore the Cassette section with the Crunch control for some really juicy tape saturation, and Lo-Fi - a macro that controls Bit and Sample Rate reduction. Want your audio to sound really vintage, just select Mono!
