The Midnight Grand Piano is a stunning concert grand piano, professionally recorded in a concert hall, with a layer of cotton covered between the mallets and strings to create an exquisite cinematic tone.

It's not just "another sampled Steinway piano" - it's a meticulously crafted virtual piano, full of nuance and personality, perfect for intimate dramas and rich cinematic passages.

Like all of our products, the Midnight Grand Piano has been developed with ease of use in mind, so you can start composing music straight away. We are sure it will become a must-have in many composers' sample collections.

The instrument was recorded in a modern concert hall environment using a series of top-of-the-line microphones (from DPA, Coles, AKG) placed close to the piano and further back in the room. We carefully mixed these microphone signals into a stereo mix. The end result is a balanced and varied sound - spacious enough not to sound boxy or claustrophobic, but dry enough to allow the flexibility to add any number of reverbs.

We recorded real pedal down samples in order to create real resonance when the sustain pedal is pressed. Some of our beta testers liked the sound of the pedal down samples so much that we decided to add an additional patch called "Midniqht Piano (Alt).nki" that uses only these samples. This patch produces a rich, full sound even when the sustain pedal is not pressed.

Mechanical sounds and room tones
With Midniqht Grand, we went far beyond sampling the notes themselves. Our sonic vision for this library was to make it sound as if you were sitting at a piano, capturing the feeling of sitting alone in an empty room with only the piano in front of you. A big part of achieving this (aside from microphone placement) is capturing the mechanical sounds of the piano - the sound of the strings returning to their resting position when the keys are released, and the sound of the damper rising when the pedal is pressed. Both of these sounds can be adjusted to your liking to enhance realism.

The Room Tone control adds the natural sound of air movement in the hall, as well as subtle creaks and clicks. When used carefully, room tone can really bring samples to life, giving the impression that the performance is taking place in a real acoustic space.

We've brought back the popular "ambient layer" - playable pads and textures that blend perfectly with the original piano.

The "Haze" layer adds smooth, dreamy sustain.
The "Shivers" layer is a texture pad created from processed live string recordings.
The "Eclipse" layer is a rich reverse grain delay effect that hovers behind the original piano.
These layers can be dialed in to suit the flavor using the Layer Mixer. Additionally, the overall "intensity" of these layers can be controlled using the "Atmosphere Intensity" dial, or automated in real time using the modulation wheel.
