Over the past few years, producer and sound designer Liam Fox O'Brien has made a habit of visiting the cathedrals and churches in the cities he visits on his travels from Australia to Spain, Mexico and California. He was always fascinated by the beautiful sound of bells ringing and echoing in churches of all shapes, sizes and ages. Each group of bells had its own unique personality and sound signature, which inspired him to record them with the aim of designing samples based on their individual characteristics.
Liam also collects recordings of similar sounds specific to each village/town/city, such as train horns, sirens, and municipal alarm signals, resulting in a wealth of harmonic content that can be processed and used to create customized libraries of sound effects, music loops, atmospheres, and one-shots. All recordings were made in 32-bit floating point.sampleThe high resolution of 96khz is ideal for deep processing and manipulation of sound in post-production, while still maintaining the integrity of the original recording.
Back in the studio, Liam edited the recordings and processed the sounds using a variety of creative processing and reamplification techniques, and experimented with some digital and analog effects. For cleaner recordings, they sounded great, with a bit of warmth added by re-recording the sound through old preamps, tape decks, recorders and effects units. In particular, creating tape loops of varying lengths and qualities to be played through two recorders simultaneously was a highlight. This technique helped to create some beautiful environments and captivating soundscapes that turned into musical loops with keys and rhythms. For some of the grittier lo-fi sounds, he created signal chains to process some of the recordings through an old Olympus Pearlcorder 400L tape recorder, which used miniature cassettes and sounded quite dreamy and nostalgic.
Take a sampling tour through amazing bells from around the world to give your next piece a unique bell sound that you can't get anywhere else.
