Created in collaboration with music composer and arranger Joachim Horsley, "Joachim's Piano" is a one-of-a-kind library of natural sounds, special effects, percussion and effects from his meticulously restored 1890's Steinway Model B piano. sounds, percussion and effects.

Over 35 hours of studio time were invested in recording this particular piano, recording space and microphone setup, which has been used in "Via Havana" and a series of YouTube videos by Joachim. Focusing on rhythmic playability, the instrument is sampled in full scale with up to 4 loop samples. All patches are recorded with and without pedals.

A historic piano.
Sampled is an 85-key Steinway Model B, built in the 1890s and recently lovingly restored. Its vintage tone and sensitivity perfectly match Joachim's playing style, while it was sampled in a way that makes it suitable for a variety of uses from live jazz to media composition.

A special set of prepared tones
As a performer, in addition to the natural sound of the piano itself, Joachim utilizes a range of carefully controlled piano preparation techniques to create a unique tone. The piano itself is often used as a percussion instrument, played with a variety of mallets, brushes and even hands. His philosophical goal is to reproduce the sound of an entire band, from bass to conga drums, using only the piano.

35 hours of studio time
Sampled in Joachim's own studio, the same microphones, instruments, setup and signal chain shown in the video were used. A pair of legendary Microtech Gefell CMV 563 microphones, equipped with the famous M7 capsule, provided the piano's dominant tone, while a pair of far-field mics provided an additional sense of space that could be added to the sound on demand. Over 35 hours of recording time was invested in capturing the details of the piano!

Rhythmic details
The entire range of the instrument is sampled in a whole-tone manner, containing up to four round robins and five layers of dynamics, in many different playing techniques. This provides the player with an instrument that is extremely rhythmically satisfying, especially in fast passages. In addition, the entire instrument supports the use of true sustain pedal samples.

Joachim has also added a variety of additional sound effects and a set of percussion sounds generated by piano and various mallet strikes.
