With the Steinway B - one of the most recorded pianos in history - as a cornerstone, it was a natural progression to build our largest piano sound library to date. Its expressive, mellow and lifelike character, combined with the input of this deep sampling, translates directly into flexibility of use. The Velvet Grand Piano was recorded in Studio A of Sophia Sessions Studio using multiple microphones, which we eventually summarized into 5 microphone positions - Proximity, Tube, Ribbon, Decca and Hall. The different combinations of these microphones can really change the tone and sound of the piano significantly, especially the different combinations between the proximity, vacuum tube and ribbon microphones, all of which were very close to the actual grand piano. To achieve a high level of detail, we sampled the piano at seven intensity levels, each with five random repetitions. We likewise sampled the sound of the sustain pedal.
