Welcome to Mark Deutsch's Bazantar!
The Bazantar is a specialty five-string acoustic bass equipped with an additional twenty-nine resonant strings and four sustaining strings. It has a melodic range of over five octaves and a resonant range of four octaves. This allows the interplay between the melody, resonance and sustaining strings to weave an unexpectedly rich resonant landscape of extremely rich textures.
Bazantar contains over 2,700 samples divided into two main categories: multisamples and phrase samples. Multisamples include the performance of plucked and bowed strings, the presence or absence of vibrato, up to 10 loops per note, and dynamic sustain/swell. We sampled phrasing with Mark Deutsch playing bass in a traditional manner and with a bowed back (Col Legno).
We've added a host of controls (e.g. pedal volume, release volume, noise reduction, EQ), a visual velocity editor, and rich convolution reverb and convolution effects. The instrument was recorded in a rich church environment using two sets of microphones (close/internal and ambient/player), so the user can adjust the sound to their liking.

Bazantar was recorded in a lush church setting with multiple mic locations. We combined dozens of different microphones into two main microphone stems. The first is a close-up, dry acoustic perspective. The other is a telephonic stem that gives you a more ambient and traditional orchestral perspective. You can use them individually or adjust them to work together.
Advanced presentation skills
Bazantar also offers a wealth of advanced expressive techniques, including four expressive arcs, pizzicato strings (jazz-inspired), multi-sampled taps, sustains with and without vibrato, and tons of extra phrasing material. So you get the best of both multisampling and phrasing.
Pre-Effects and Chaos Effects
Bazantar contains two parallel effect systems. The first is our new pre-effects, which allow you to control the most basic effects (such as step-based filtering, pitch, delay, and our new textured delay). You can also go deeper with our Chaos effect system, which includes phase modulation, equalizers, bit crushing, distortion, double delays, and more!
