Spitfire founder Christian Henson has always been fascinated by steel drums, known for their emotionally mellow tones, sub-bass harmonies, and rich timbre and dynamic range. After working with Frank Ricotti on a number of percussion projects, including the groundbreaking Hans Timmer percussion, we returned to the halls of AIR Studios to further expand our range of percussion instruments. Our aim was to document the many uses of these steel drums, using different microphone positions to capture different perspectives. Our tree mic position is ideal for those looking to incorporate steel drums into orchestral film, game and TV soundtracks, while the closer and more focused position is more suited to RnB and electronic tracks. We capture versatility and touching tones at softer levels up to louder, harsher dynamic levels for a more traditional Caribbean sound.

The Steel Drum comes with two interfaces - the standard multi-microphone, designed for those familiar with our orchestral range, and the front end for instant articulation and microphone adjustments. We've also packed the Steel Drum with our sophisticated eDNA

engine, dozens of instantly playable presets designed by our award-winning team of composers, producers and sound designers. Every note was recorded by AIR Studios' resident expert engineer, Jake Jackson, using a series of priceless vintage microphones through a Neve "Montserrat" preamplifier and a beautifully maintained Studer 2" recorder. Then converted to digital at 96k through the finest Prism AD converters.

Originally a Trinidadian tradition, bamboo sticks were used to hit kitchen utensils, trash cans, and drums, which evolved into an all-steel band movement in the 1930s and a popular carnival instrument in the 1940s. They can be found on movie soundtracks in the seminal works of Jacob Pastorius, Cliff Martinez and Hans Timmer, as well as in popular dance and RnB songs worldwide. Percussionist Frank Riccotti is a living legend. In addition to being one of the world's most sought-after percussionists by top recording artists, he has played on countless blockbuster soundtracks such as Inception, Skyfall, Twilight, Madagascar, Star Trek, The Chronicles of Narnia, Fantastic Mr. Fox and the Spy series.
