Mixland's Vac Attack is an analog-modeled optical limiter plug-in designed to control the dynamics of individual tracks and groups. Vacuum tube saturation circuitry introduces harmonic-rich warmth and character to vocals, drums, bass, and your stereo bus.
Vac Attack Based on discontinued hardware units
Based on the coveted hardware unit, which was discontinued in 2020 and has since skyrocketed in value. The plugin was developed by Grammy Award-winning mixer Jesse Ray Ernster and coding ninja Eddie Lucciola.
Focus on changes in character, not loudness
Vac Attack provides a Gain Link function that relates the value of the Reduction knob to the value of the Gain knob. Increasing the amount of gain reduction results in an increase in cosmetic gain. Therefore, you can make level-matched A/B comparisons and focus on the beautiful character that this optical limiter plug-in provides.
Sounds natural.
The optical design employed by Vac Attack for nonlinear gain reduction centers on the digital simulation of the light source and light-related resistors. As the input level of the plug-in increases, the light source brightens and causes the resistors to apply compression. Using the plug-in's Knee control, you can fine-tune the rate at which the compression ratio is applied, resulting in organic nonlinear gain reduction.
High and low shelf equalizer for easy shaping
Tone A dual-band push EQ with two modes (J and E) allows you to shape the tone of a track with compression applied. Whether you want to add warmth to the lows or brilliance to the highs, these EQ modes provide the flexibility you need. Switch the center frequency of the LF button filter between 52 Hz (J) and 230 Hz (E). In addition, switch the center frequency of the HF push filter between 4.4 kHz (J) and 10 kHz (E).
Using the built-in sidechain EQ
Avoiding Pumping Effects Vac Attack includes a sidechain EQ to filter signals running through its sidechain circuitry. Using High-pass, Bell and Low-pass filters, you can affect the sidechain signal in a variety of ways. By filtering out audio material that would trigger limiter plug-ins at inappropriate times, you can dial in tight and controlled limiting without unwanted pumping effects.
Control of tube saturation and harmonic content
Vac Attack's Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) feature adds a rich layer of harmonics to your audio, giving it the fuller sound found in analog hardware. This feature is perfect for adding character to sterile digital recordings. Use it judiciously to add saturation, or crank it up for a more aggressive, distorted sound.
Channel linking/unlinking for detailed stereo control
By default, Vac Attack applies equal gain reduction to the left and right channels to maintain a balanced stereo image. If you are working with dual mono audio or balanced mixes, channel linking can remain enabled for uniform processing. Disabling channel linking helps avoid the pumping effect when processing stereo files with very different information on the left and right channels.
