TDR Ultrasonic is a filter designed to control the accumulation of ultrasonic content in an oversampled recording, processing or playback link. Its purpose is to prevent ultrasound from entering a nonlinear system.
Examples of nonlinear systems include peak limiters, creative distortion devices, compressors, and other forms of modulation. Analog capture devices (such as tape recorders and platter systems) also exhibit nonlinear behavior, as do all playback systems (albeit to a lesser extent).
The total distortion produced by a non-linear system increases with the bandwidth of the input signal. This applies to both audible and inaudible content, and it applies to the entire production process: while narrowband mono signals (such as guitars or vocals) can artfully handle a large amount of distortion, wideband mixes require only a tiny amount of saturation to collapse aurally.
This is because nonlinearity produces not only harmonic distortion, but also intermodulation distortion, which is a largely nonharmonic distortion. This distortion creates new crossovers at the sum and difference of the original crossover frequencies. As a result, these new crossovers end up either above or below the source frequency, which may end up in the audible bandwidth.
