Manos Del Mar (Hands of the Sea) is a musical love letter to the delicate symbiotic relationship between nature and people in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The Splice team visited the beautiful coastal waters of Baja with Mexico City-based singer-songwriter Moncaya, combining live recordings and music about how local fishermen and activists are promoting respect for the ocean, sustainable fishing and tourism practices that respect the ocean and protect fragile ecosystems.

While in Baja, Splice got in touch with Orgcas, a woman-led and woman-run organization that specializes in creating marine conservation solutions through science, communication, education, and local tourism.Orgcas decided to tackle an issue that has been ringing alarm bells in the scientific community for decades, namely the collapse of shark populations (along with several other issues). According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), at least 36% of the 1,200 shark species are currently in danger of extinction. But in Mexico, small-scale shark fishing is still customary in local communities and has been a major source of income for entire families for decades. So in order for Orgcas to make progress in protecting these waters, they need to build trust with local fishermen. In the past, they have been reluctant to work with scientific organizations like Orgcas for fear that fishing licenses would be revoked without notice.

After lengthy conversations, they have been able to develop a solution that ensures the sustainability of the sharks and the families in the area.Orgcas has been converting fishing revenues into eco-tourism revenues for local fishermen and training them in new ways of fishing in a sustainable manner. They have also been working with locals to petition and protect people from dynamite fishing, underwater mining, and uncontrolled tourism, which threaten sharks and the entire Gulf of California ecosystem.

This package captures this ongoing conservation effort through sound and music. You'll hear live recordings made by Splice and local fishermen themselves, including the serene sounds of their boats, fishing lines, and the ocean. You'll hear the ambience of cactus forests and lapping waves, while Moncaya plays the charango and sings delicate melodies with the sounds of nature. The set even features a hydrophone recording of a sperm whale making its patented clicking sound. All of these sounds are transformed into versatile percussion and melodies that blend together seamlessly. The entire set is a serene and captivating soundscape that deserves our attention and protection.
